Key specifications

Technopol's bulk insulation is rigid, closed-cell, fire-retardant expanded polystyrene (LiteCel / FRCel) supplied as cut-to-size flat sheets in a range of density grades from 12 to 30 kg/m³, each with its own thermal conductivity and compressive strength.

PropertyValueStandard
Material / build-upRigid closed-cell fire-retardant expanded polystyrene (LiteCel / FRCel), cut-to-size flat sheets — all grades supplied fire-retarded
Thermal conductivity, λ @10 °C (max)0.033–0.045 W/m·K
Nominal density12–30 kg/m³
Compressive stress @10% compression (min)60–200 kPa
Cross-breaking (flexural) strength (min)80–250 kPa
Fire-resistance rating (REI)None — reaction-to-fire class only; plain board carries no REI (minutes) ratingSANS 10177-2
Service temperature80 long-term / 100 short-term °C
Standard sheet sizesWidths 1200 / 1220; lengths 2000–7500; thickness 5–600 mm
Applicable / test standardsSANS 53501-1 (reaction to fire); SANS 10177-11 & -9 (flame spread); ISO 9001:2015 (ISO 14001 & 45001 lapsed Mar 2026, recertification in progress) manufacturerSANS 53501-1

Thermal, density and strength values are grade-dependent and span the product range from the lightest grade (12SD: λ 0.045 W/m·K, ≥60 kPa) to the densest (30DV: λ 0.033 W/m·K, ≥200 kPa); intermediate grades 15SD, 16DV, 20DV and 24DV fall between. Confirm the specific grade per specification. Reaction-to-fire Class B-s1,d0 was determined on a ~60 mm sheet at ~18.37 kg/m³ (SANS 53501-1 SBI test; report '2023-08-17 Technopol', Ignis Testing, Cape Town; 5-year validity). The SANS 10177-11 flame-spread class B/B1/2/H (report FTC 19/194) is stated valid only for thicknesses up to 120 mm and densities up to 18 kg/m³. Higher-density (24DV/30DV) or thicker board is not separately classified. Plain EPS board carries no fire-resistance (REI, minutes) rating — fire resistance is a tested-assembly property under SANS 10177-2, not a property of the loose board. No R-value/U-value table is published for the bulk board; R = thickness ÷ λ (e.g. 100 mm of grade 20DV at λ = 0.035 ≈ 2.9 m²·K/W).

The limits

Where not to use this

A material specified for the wrong job fails you, then us. We would rather lose the order.

In contact with or within the code clearance of flues, chimneys, geyser vents, recessed downlights, hot ductwork or hot pipes in a ceiling void.
EPS is combustible (fire-retardant treated, but combustible) and softens above roughly 70–80 °C — insulation packed against a hot fitting deforms and is an ignition risk, and the B-s1,d0 class (VERIFIED — IT 23-08-00009) says nothing about behaviour in contact with a heat source.
→ Mineral/stone wool around every hot penetration with the manufacturer's clearance maintained, or a non-combustible fire hood at each luminaire.
Left exposed as the finished surface in an occupied room, a warehouse, a garage or a ceiling void that is also a return-air plenum; or laid in a loft that will be walked on or used for storage.
EPS should not be left as an exposed internal lining (it is combustible and its class is a surface-spread classification, not a fire-resistance rating), and it creeps and dents permanently beyond its ~1% strain design limit, so foot traffic and stored boxes crush the boards and destroy the R-value you paid for.
→ Line it with plasterboard or a fire-rated board; provide battened walkway boards over the insulation for loft access and storage.
Assuming a thin board 'does XA' — e.g. specifying 50 mm and claiming roof/ceiling compliance.
At λ 0.033–0.045 W/m·K (PROVISIONAL, grade-dependent) it takes real thickness to reach the SANS 10400-XA roof/ceiling requirement of total R ≥ 3.7 m²K/W in ALL zones (Zone 5 humid-coastal keeps 2.7 with roof ventilation), and the total R must include the whole build-up — not just the board.
→ Build the actual assembly in the free SANS 10400-XA checker (../../technical/xa-compliance/) and let it size the thickness; for external walls remember double-skin masonry and plastered single leaf ≥140 mm are already deemed-to-satisfy and need no added insulation.
